Legalized in 1824 by James McGregor, it seems to have a history of illegality behind it but, clearly, there are no historical accounts. It remained in the hands of the founder’s family until 1922, when it was bought by a group of blenders. From here it changed ownership several times, until reaching United Distillers in 1986 from which it was suspended in 1993. Sold in 1997 to Inver House Distillers it was reactivated the following year.
Fun fact: the distillery is also known by the names Balminoch and Cromdale. In the past some independent bottlings were sold under the name “Deerstalker”, although used by other malts and blends.
