A road cut between the rocks leads to this distillery, in an area difficult to reach by land but easy from the sea. Distilled from groundwater carried through an ingenious water system, in pear stills, in its best known expressions it is unpeated, the only one on Islay. Founded around 1880/1881, it passes through several owners, but it still remains the distillery with the highest production potential on the island. Curiosity: its name means “Mouth of the River”, referring to the nearby Margadale river. In the warehouses there are also barrels containing Tobermory & Ledaig. Together with Glenmorangie and Jura he owns the tallest stills.
