Founded by Sir Alexander Ramsay (from whom he inherited the unicorn symbol of his clan) in 1824, it has a long history of ownership changes until 1926, when it was closed until 1939. Purchased and reopened by the Associated Scottish Distilleries it was then sold in 1971 to Tomintoul-Glenlivet Distillery Co and acquired only 2 years later by the Whyte & Mackay ltd group. Curiosity: in the past, it also produced peaty malt at 55ppm.
