It was founded in 1858 by George Smith, one of the first distillers to abandon illegality (with threats from less inclined neighbors) in the “Livet” valley. In addition to these difficulties, he had to fight against the distilleries in the area: the more the valley became famous, the more they added -Glenlivet alongside their name as a geographical indication (e.g. Aultmore-Glenlivet, Balmenach-Glenlivet, Balvenie-Glenlivet, Convalmore -Glenlivet.etc). After many legal battles, the use of “The” in front of the name was allowed. Currently owned by Pernod Ricard. Fun Fact: The first “Glenlivet” was located on George Smith’s farm, then they moved to today’s site, in Minmore The biggest consumers of Glenlivet Single Malt are the USA, with almost half of the bottled.
