Founded by James Robertson in 1826, after his first distillery was burned by competitors, but this first Lochnagar was also burned in 1841. Rebuilt slightly further south (across the River Dee) by John Begg, it is considered to date official. It gained the suffix “Royal” in 1848 when Queen Victoria visited the distillery. Remained in the family until 1916, it was bought by John Dewar & Sons who in 1930 passed the administration to SMD, closed only during the Second World War, was rebuilt in 1963. Fun fact: Begg is said to have been an abusive distiller well before 1845

It is mainly used in blends, such as Vat-69 At one time, it was also known as Lochnigar
