Founded in 1892 in Dufftown by the same owners as Glenfiddich, after centuries it is still owned by William Grant & Sons, something quite unique for a distillery. Equipped at its inception with second hand stills from Lagavulin and Glen Albyn, it demonstrates that the influence of terroir in whiskey is not always relevant: it is close and uses the same water as Glenfiddich, but produces very different malts from the latter. Curiosity: It owns a business of coopers who produce the barrels used Each cask that is sold to brokers or independents is “soiled” with a teaspoon of another malt, thus making it impossible to sell the whiskey as “single malt.” At birth, the name “Glen Gordon” was also proposed. The first official bottling was released only in 1973
