Founded in 1897 during the “Whiskey Boom” it went bankrupt shortly thereafter, in 1906. The owners, Tomatin Distillery Co, returned to producing in 1909 and until 1956 everything went so well that they added 2 stills and 2 more in 1958 and 4 more. in 1961, for a total of 10. Until now: when it closed in 1974 it had 23 stills in operation. In 1986, after a liquidation in 1985, it was bought by two Japanese Takara Shuzo & Co and Okara & Co becoming the first rising sun owners of a Scottish distillery. Curiosity: in 2002 the eleven original stills were removed
